  1. "Words and Wings"

"Words and Wings" invited me to break out of my shell and get uncomfortable in making art. I often like to be planned out and precise when I create. This project not only pushed me in subject matter (How do I represent the current stage in my life through the combination of visuals and words?), but it also pushed me formally. With the nature of the vinyl records, I was forced to let go of my perfectionism when carving as the Dremel bobbed up and down over the ridges in the material. This was an interesting practice for me as I thought about what it means to destroy the records, consequently destroying their sound, while also preserving their words in the carved surface.

This piece demonstrates my current stage in life: a combination of trying to stay close to God, care for myself, and love others well. Each vinyl represents one of these elements. The butterfly in the center represents myself, which spans across all three, symbolizing my active involvement in all three activities. The songs on the records speak to similar ideas, creating a connection between song, word, and visuals.

2-4. Meditations on How Music Floats Through Space

Drawing exercises in representing how different sounds in music can evoke visual representations.

5. Drawing in Between the Lines

An exercise in finding meaning and images from seamingly scribbles on paper.
